Liefde en puin - 2009
De Kift
De Kift is a Dutch band from Koog aan de Zaan, The Netherlands, whose music has got influences from punk, brass, rock and pop music. The band was formed in 1988.
In 2009 De Kift realized a so-called split single project. It was a set of five CD singles on which De Kift covered a song of another band, while the other band in turn covered a song of De Kift. One of those singles was in collaboration with the Scottish rock band Franz Ferdinand. De Kift covered Love And Destroy, which was based on The Master and Margarita. The Dutch title was Liefde en Puin or Love and Debris.
De Kift adapted the song as part of a theatre adaptation of The Master and Margarita by the Frisian theater company Tryater. This adaptation was the opening play and one of the main attractions at the Oerol 2010 Theatre Festival, which was organised from June 12 to 21, 2010 on the island of Terschelling in the Netherlands. The music would later be reworked for the next studio album of De Kift, but that never happened, although band member Marco Heijne had said: «This novel keeps coming back within De Kift. It is an inspiring story that will lead to an engaging CD.» Which not. We've only been able to save two songs: Liefde en Puin and Hella.
In the tradition of The Master and Margarita, the preparation of the play had quite some difficulties. A few weeks before the premiere at the Oerol 2010 Theater Festival, a huge fire destroyed large pieces of the sets and props of the theatre company.

Franz Ferdinand
The song Love and Destroy, written by Alex Kapranos and Nick McCarthygot an exciting chorus «Margarita - Love and Destroy» and was released in 2004 as the b-side of the single Michael. It is based on the well known scene from The Master and Margarita in which Margarita flies over Moscow on her way to the witches' sabbath and Woland's gala, and refers to the havoc she wreaks in the apartment of the critic Latunsky in chapter 21.
