Plays staged between 2001 and 2010
In 2001, the first year of the 21st century, the Russian director Roman Viktyuk started to stage his adaptation of The Master and Margarita. It was the start of a whole series of representations, not only in Moscow, but in many places in Russia and abroad. He would soon be named in one breath with the other Moscow directors Yuri Lyubimov of the Taganka Theatre and Valery Belyakovich of the Theatre South-West. That same year, Oskaras Koršunovas from Vilnius (Lithuania) started a European tour which made his theatre adaptation to a reference.
Still in 2001, the list of theatres in Moscow that would be having Мастер и Маргарита in the standard repertoire for years, was complemented by the Stanislavskij Theatre with director Sergei Adonin.
In Germany, Frank Castorf brought Der Meister und Margarita on stage for the first time at the Volksbühne in Berlin in 2002, while Edward Kemp made fame in 2004 with The Master and Margarita at the Chichester Theatre Festival in the UK. Both versions would be traveling soon around the world. And in 2005 the Hungarian János Szász staged A Mester és Margarita for the first time in Budapest.
In 2010, the last year of this decade, The Master and Margarita was staged more than 1,500 times in various versions, and it shone especially at festivals. On the world famous Fringe Festival in Edinburgh both the Oxford University Dramatic Society (OUDS) and Fragments from London showed their interpretations. And on the Oerol Festival on the isle of Terschelling (Netherlands), Master and Margarita by the Frisian theatre company Tryater and the music group De Kift was one of the main attractions.
