Institute of Modern Russia - English
Non-profit organisation striving for respect for human rights, the rule of law, and civil society in Russia. President Pavel Khodorkovsky is the son of the probably better known Mikhail Khodorkovsky.

Russia Beyond the Headlines - English
Russia Beyond the Headlines is a multilingual news and information resource that offers news, comments, opinion and analysis on culture, politics, business, science, and public life in Russia. It publishes print supplements in 26 influential international newspapers in 16 different languages in 23 countries of the world. Although it is sponsored by the state owned Rossiyskaya Gazeta, it is rather independent.

Novaya Gazeta - English
Novaya Gazeta is the only truly independent Russian newspaper in Russia. The former President of the Soviet Union Mikhail Gorbachev used the money he earned with his Nobel Peace Prize to help set up the Novaya Gazeta in 1993 and to purchase its first computers. Six Novaya Gazeta journalists, including Anna Politkovskaya, have been murdered since 2001, in connection with their investigations.

The Moscow Times - English
The Moscow Times is the leading English daily newspaper in Moscow, distributed for free in hotels, cafés and restaurants, as well as by subscription. It was my main source of information when I was living there. Since it is an independent newspaper, its website is occasionally inaccessible for unknown reasons. The paper belongs to the Finnish media group Sanoma.

The Moscow News - English
This English language magazine which was also distributed for free in the Moscow hotels, cafes and restaurants was once owned by Mikhail Khodorkovsky. Now it is part of the RIA Novosti media holding and as such came under direct control of the Kremlin. In December 2013, president Vladimir Putin issued a decree to liquidate RIA Novosti and the state-run radio station Golos Rossii (The Voice of Russia) and create a new information agency by combining the two. As a result, The Moscow News announced on March 14, 2014 that it had temporarily ceased updating materials on its news website and «hoped to be operating soon again» which, so far, hasn't happened yet.

English language web version of the above-mentioned state-run radio station Golos Rossii (Voice of Russia). The French version is the only version that is still presented as before. In the other languages, RIA Novosti and The Voice of Russia have been combined in the new site Sputnik.
