Description

At Satan’s ball Margarita sees polar bears playing concertinas and dancing the Kamarinsky on a platform. The камаринская (Kamarinskaya) is a Rus-sian song and dance with a short repeated tune and rather ribald words. When the kamarinskaya is sung and danced, the right steps are not the dancers’ main concern. Grotesque steps, shrugs of the shoulders, occa-sionally ugly and revolting body movements - everything is allowed.

When you go, on any sunny Saturday, to the Sparrow Hills in Moscow, you will undoubtedly see several groups of revelers accompanying a newlywed couple on their прогулка (progulka) or stroll. Don't be surprised when they start dancing the kamarinskaya, as in this video from September 2008.
