Le maître et Marguerite
Jean-François Desserre
Jean-François Desserre (°1970) studied graphic design - first at the École d'Arts Visuels of Cambrai (1991) and later at the École nationale d'Art of Cergy-Pontoise (1992) - before getting a Postgraduate degree in Art History at the Université Paul Valéry in Montpellier (2001) and a Ph. D. in Art Science at the Université de Provence in Aix-en-Provence (2008).
While being an author of graphic novels, Jean-François Desserre also undertook plastic research focused primarily on the practices of drawing. He regularly shows the results of it at various exhibitions and galleries of contemporary art as wall drawings or as independent drawings.
In 1999, Jean-François Desserre represented the city of Montpellier at the Biennale des Jeunes Créateurs d´Europe et de la Méditerranée in Rome with his adaptation of the novel Die Verwandlung (The Metamorphosis) by Franz Kafka.
Jean-François Desserre loved to realize projects based on the works of Russian authors because, in his opinion, they are quite suitable for graphic adaptations, especially an excellent hallucinating story like The Master and Margarita. In 2001 and 2002, he made two trips to Russia to prepare his graphic adaptation of Bulgakov's novel. His adaptation has not been published. It's not a classic adaptation but a free interpretation or, as the author explains, a journey through the novel. «I went to Moscow twice, in the winters of 2001 and 2002, and I went to the scenes of the novel as well as to Bulgakov's apartment to make sketches, to collect graphic material and to develop a kind of vision - a confrontation between today's Moscow and yesterday's novel, including my own journey. I doubt that the result will ever be published...»
In 2013, Jean-François Desserre published Le Double, an adaptation of The Double, a novel by Fyodor Dostoevsky. Since then, however, we didn't hear anymore of Desserre. His blog disappeared from the internet, and other pages related to him vanished too. We could save some pages of Deserre's comic strip. Click on the arrow to download the chapters 1 and 3 of The Master and Margarita.
Flash animation
As a spin-off of Desserre's graphic novel, the French animators Clément Charmet and Elisabeth Klimoff made a Flash animation of the first and third chapter of Desserre's The Master and Margarita. Together with Jean-François Desserre himself, this animation also disappeared from the net. Fortunately, we could save it before was lost. Unfortunately, we can't present on this mobile version of the website, since mobile devices don't support Flash technology.
