Poems Inspired by the Novel
It is not easy to make an inventory of the poems which were inspired by The Master and Margarita. Poetry is often about emotions and does not care about literary references. If the names Margarita or Behemoth - the most common references to the novel in poetry - are not mentioned in the title, or when no quotations or typical concepts from the novel can be found in the text, one may not know that the poem was inspired by the novel, unless the poet specifically refers to it.
Nevertheless, in our quest for adaptations of The Master and Margarita, we encounter more and more poems. We have hesitated to include them in this website, however. For we do not have the resources to translate everything into English, Dutch or French, and also because it is generally not easy to translate poetry.
But in the month of May 2012, Għaqda Poeti Maltin (the Maltese Poets Association) published the poem The Master and Margarita of the 21st Century by the poet Sabahudin Hadzialic (Bosnia-Herzegovina) in its journal Versi. For us, it was the reason to dive into our archives searching for poems inspired by The Master and Margarita, and add them to this site, but only in the language in which they have been published.
