Andrey Vladimirovich Nikolaev

Biography

Andrey Vladimirovich Nikolaev (1922-2013) was an illustrator from Moscow with a great preference for literature. After graduating from the Gerasimov Institute of Cinematography in Moscow in 1947, he began working for the State Publishing House for Fiction.

He became known for his illustrations of the famous novel War and Peace by Lev Nikolaevich Tolstoy. The book has been reprinted ten times and a total of over 1.5 million copies have been sold.

Nikolaev was also greatly appreciated as a draftsman of historical scenes which he produced as educational material for schools.

He confirmed his illustrative talent with countless drawings for Russian novels and stories, including for the famous short story The Queen of Spades by Alexander Sergeevich Pushkin.

In 1988 and 1989, Nikolaev made a series of notable illustrations for the novel The White Guard by Mikhail Bulgakov. In the meantime, he also started a series for The Master and Margarita, which he worked on from 1987 to 1990. In 2019, the Moscow publisher Eksmo used this series to publish a deluxe edition of the novel.
