New film plans again
December 22, 2017
In the eleven years of the existence of this website we have often written about movie directors and producers who had plans to make a screen version of The Master and Margarita. Sometimes the plans were dropped after a few years, whether or not after having presented a meritorious trailer, as was the case with the young promising Russian filmmaker Rinat Timerkaev. Sometimes it worked out, but the results, to put it mildly, were not overwhelming. Just think of the films made by Giovanni Brancale (2008) and Charlotte Waligòra (2017). And some others, like the Finnish Katariina Lillqvist and the Russian-American duo Svetlana Migunova-Dali and Grace Loh keep repeating their promises, but have not shown anything concrete yet.
A new name has now come up. He’s called Alexander Golberg Jero, and he presents himself as a classically trained musician, who graduated from the Moscow Music College and State Academy (sic) in 1996, and then moved to New York where he studied at the Parsons School of Design. Now he would be living in Detroit, where he is involved in making techno music.
At the beginning of December 2017, Jero announced that he is working on a computer-generated film version of The Master and Margarita. He said that he had been inspired for his Margarita by the American actress Catherine Zeta Jones, that Donald Trump gave him inspiration for his Pontius Pilate, and that he would lend his own face to the Woland character. We have not seen any images yet, but we could listen to five pieces of music.
Catherine Zeta Jones as Margarita
We will, of course, have to wait and see if anything will ever be realised. We have already learned to be careful with predictions. Especially after having clicked the Investors tab on the website of the project, where there was only one sentence to read: «Now we need $ 5 million budget to produce animation». We’re looking forward to whatever will happen.
